Over Christmas 2024, @hello_this_is_ian took part

Over Christmas 2024, @hello_this_is_ian took part in our Christmas challenge. Ian and his family converted their Christmas festive meals to be fully vegan in exchange for £250 donated to @adlopirineo who are fighting to protect wolves and bears in the Pyrenees.

Ian, himself vegan, had this to say,

"I came across a post that said that someone will donate money to a charity of my choice if I was able to make my non vegan family eat vegan for Christmas.

Well as I volunteer for a wolf and bear conservation organization that really needs funds, since I'm vegan for the animals I thought this to be a very good challenge, I would get some money for the organization I volunteer and animals won't be served at a quite traditionally meat leaded Christmas meal. Win win.

The challenge here was both my grandma and my dad, he loves his hunting meat and my grandma is quite old school fashioned, but the challenge was worth the effort and with the help off my vegetarian sister we convince everyone that this could work, and by the end, everyone was very happy about what they eat. there was some interesting conversations about veganism, respect and both @plant.seeds and @adlopirineos"

Josh, 26 from London, donated his £30 vegan week bounty to the Trussel Trust. His thoughts:

"I took up Plant Seeds because my diet had become worryingly beige, and I found myself struggling to commit to healthier options. So my decision to go vegan came more from an aspiration to eat more vegetables than to eat less meat.

In the past, I never saw myself going vegan because I don't feel strongly about eating animals. But it turns out I'm not alone on that front. Some of my closest vegan friends are the same - one of them went vegan "for a dare" six years ago, and despite having no obvious qualms with meat, remains vegan to this day.

I never quite understood why until this week. I found being vegan was almost no extra effort compared to my regular diet, but had some distinct benefits. Ordinarily, I try to avoid processed junk food, but frequently fail. Being vegan seems to be a simpler proxy to achieve that goal. Any extra effort I put into eating vegan, was usually effort I ought to have put into eating healthier anyway.

I've started to consider it might not a coincidence that some of those dont-care vegans I mentioned earlier are also some of the fittest and most productive people I know. They're all busy people like me, but who eat better and probably have a little more energy because of it. They've kept it on simply because it works for them. And perhaps it will for me too - ask me in six years."

Cailyn, 28, from the Scottish Highlands, donated her £30 vegan week to charity. Her thoughts:

"Heading into my vegan week I was excited to try something new and challenge myself to stick to the diet for the whole week.

Leaving meat behind for a week didn't worry me too much as I'd already tried and regularly ate veggie meals and meat alternatives but as a self confessed chocoholic I was more concerned about containing my sweet tooth.

I have to say the week was relatively easy. By planning out meals, trying new recipes and reaching for new options in the shops I found it fun and didn't find myself hungry or missing much from my old diet. The meat and dairy alternatives have really came a long way from when they first came out on the market and if you haven't tried some recently you should give some a go as I bet they'll surprise you.

The only real challenge was looking for 'on-the-go options' when i was out the house. I found the options fairly limited and became frustrated with the amount of products that have milk in them that really don't need to.

After feeling lighter, healthier and full of more energy after the week I've definitely tried to keep a lot more veggie options in my diet and found that I prefer almond and coconut milk over dairy these days too 💫

If you haven't given it a go you should! If not for you then set yourself a challenge and do it for charity instead!"

Amanda, 22, from Canada was paid £30 to give veganism a shot. Her views:

"I recently participated in the Plant Seeds week long vegan challenge, and thoroughly enjoyed it. In the past, I have attempted to go vegan, without much success. I always thought it was too hard, expensive or inconvenient. This challenge really changed my perspective on veganism, and showed how convenient and easy it can be. The support I received from other participants was especially motivating, and made it more fun 🙂

During the week, I got to try new recipes, that ended up being so delicious you wouldn’t be able to tell they were vegan. My favourites were my burritos and falafel wraps, which were so filling and fought my previous opinion that vegan food wouldn’t be satisfying. Through meal planning and focusing on each ingredient that goes into my food, I felt healthier, saw an increase in energy and other health benefits.

I wanted to go vegan for not only the animals, but also the planet, which I believe is something most people would not think about. The livestock and fishing industries are one of the worst contributors to climate change. If everyone tried to include more plant based meals in their diet, it would make a significant positive impact. I encourage everyone to challenge themselves and see how great going vegan can be."

Vineet, 25, from Liverpool, was paid £30 to try veganism for a week. Their thoughts:

"Taking part in the Plant Seeds Vegan Challenge was an inspiring experience! I discovered that a vegan lifestyle can be both delicious and enjoying. We all are busy in our lives whether it's work or study, and for that we aim to intake a proper diet with all nutritional aspects. During the challenge I realised that we don't have to hurt animals for nutrition or I should say just for a 2 minutes taste which goes off once we swallow the food. Interesting fact here is that, we can get all that nutrition from vegan and vegetarian food as well. Speaking of items like soya, chickpea, spinach and many more that have high level of nutritional aspects in them, could be an excellent replacement for all animal based food. I am really glad that I went for this challenge and explored the beauty of a vegan life.
At last, I would like to thank Plant Seeds for the motivation and now I’m excited to keep making choices that show love for animals and our planet."

Helen, 20, from Leeds was paid £30 to try veganism for a week. Their thoughts:

"I was really excited to go into the week, as recently I had been eating more vegan meals. By preparing the weekend before it took the stress off cooking, especially when I was really busy with uni and work. Overall, I really enjoyed the meals and didn’t find myself wanting meat based meals. I think the most difficult thing for me was having plant based milk and having to use that for my coffee. Plus I didn’t really think about having a balanced diet so I definitely lacked protein. I would get really hungry between meals so it’s something I would need to consider in future. Ultimately I would really recommend. I definitely felt healthier and it has opened my mind to better and cleaner eating."

PAID: Manju, from Jaipur, India was paid £30 to complete a vegan week.

Their reflection:

I participated in the vegan week challenge and found it easy for the most part because it was just dairy that I had to 'give up'. I enjoyed new plant milk options. The only tiny difficulty was that I love Indian desserts, most of which happen to be with dairy. But I fought the urge and worked on my willpower. I ate vegan ice cream/chocolates instead. 🍦🍫 The best part? I felt lighter than before and experienced higher energy levels. I totally recommend trying this out!

I also spoke to my daughters who are vegan about animal ethics and found it to be a very interesting topic. I want to learn more and consider contributing to the vegan movement.

Izzy, 21, from Sheffield, was paid £30 to do Vegan Week. Her reflections:

"Going into the week I thought I would struggle, mainly in the lack of variety of foods I would be eating. And although I got through an alarming amount of hummus, I was surprised by how much more interesting my meals were compared to my regular eating habits. I have always been someone who eats mindlessly, yet I became more thoughtful about what I ate and felt a noticeable change in my outlook on cooking and eating since.

I went through the typical struggles of someone starting this diet in that I felt low in energy, had cravings and was not eating enough. Through a bit of trial and error (and a lot of cliff bars) I adapted and by the end of the week didn’t realise it was over by the end.

It should be mentioned that I spent much more money, time and energy during the week. Doing this challenge in a time where I have work/uni would be far less feasible. I also had one dream someone force fed me meat and I didn’t like it so maybe I’ve been swayed??"

Zak, 25, from North Yorkshire was paid £30 to be vegan for a week. They opted for the value to be donated to GiveDirectly. Their reflections:

"my vegan week was smooth sailing, likely due to my incredibly consistent meals, having eaten the same breakfast and lunch most days for the past 7 years. Luckily I could switch out the dairy (oh my how I missed cheese) for vegan alternatives and was surprised at the improvement they've had since I last tried them.

My dinner was also easy to fix and simply required switching out my meats for an alternative like tofu or tempeh. I was quite surprised at some things that aren't vegan for example Quorn mince.

If I was to do it for longer, I'd likely try to do something different instead of direct substitutions to minimise the processed food, but I still very much found it quite easy.

The hardest part for me was getting the calories in, as vegan yoghurt in particular is much less calory dense than dairy, almost a 1/3!!!! I ended up losing a bit of weight over the week and feeling tired because of it, and found myself supplementing with peanuts and cashews quite a bit as a result.

I don't know what I'll change as a result of the challenge, apart from consuming less dairy as I might be a little more lactose intolerant than I thought 👀."

Stefan, 23, from NYC donated his £25 prize to WWF. His thoughts on vegan week:

"Coming into my vegan week, I thought it was going to be quite challenging because I normally eat meat in almost all my meals, and even when there is no meat there is often some other non-vegan product (cheeeeeese). It turned out that the week was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be, as I quickly discovered there are many simple alternatives that were not a part of my normal diet (tofu). I also do not tend to cook with a wide variety of vegetables, and so it was nice to broaden the vegetables I was using (if only for a week).

I had two main challenges during the week. The first was that I found it quite annoying to have to pay close attention to the ingredients in every item I am buying (although I’m sure if I were vegan for long enough I would learn what things tend to be vegan). I was so focused on not eating meat and dairy (and was so proud that I remembered not to use fish sauce) that I accidentally was eating egg noodles. In my head becoming vegan was just a simple switch (as long as you have the will), however it obviously takes work to ensure that you are actually eating vegan.

The second challenge was a slight extension of this, when I was eating at the house of a person I did not know. I did not think of asking ahead about a vegan meal and it turned out that we were served a vegetarian, but not vegan, meal. I felt it would be rude to not eat it (and also don’t know what I would’ve eaten instead), and so I ate it. Obviously in a restaurant there are almost always vegan options, and they will do their best to accommodate you, but this situation is slightly more complicated.

Although it wasn’t the most successful vegan week (as I failed it on multiple occasions), but it was defiantly very thought provoking and eye opening. I don’t see myself becoming vegan any time soon, but defiantly have tried to increase the array of vegetables that I eat and focus my meals on them a little bit more."

Week 1
Going into the the Plant Seeds vegan week I was excited to find out how much of an adjustment this change to my diet would be. I thought it would be relatively easy as I don’t eat much meat at all, don’t like eggs, and only consume dairy in my coffee, cheese, and chocolate. However, I was ultimately surprised with how much of the things I eat actually contained animal products.

Throughout the week I stuck to eating repeats of meals, eg avocado on toast for breakfast. I also cooked a massive batch of chilli on by first day which I ate throughout the week, allowing me to develop a good routine making it easier to stick to the diet. I really enjoyed spending more time cooking and preparing meals as I couldn’t rely on my usual 10 min meals (pesto pasta).

My main issues came in the form of lack of cheese :( and the dreaded meal deal. I completed the week during exam season so was spending the majority of my time in the library, because of this I ended up eating meal deals a few times and became very sick of the falafel wraps and hummus sandwiches. I can be quite a fussy eater sometimes and also found it hard to find an alternative to the brunch bars I normally eat as I don’t like nuts.

Overall, despite some mild difficulties, I really enjoyed my experience over vegan week. I found it quite interesting thinking about what I consume on a regular basis and how just making some small changes (eg switching from egg noodles to rice noodles in my stir fry) can make a meal vegan. It really made me reflect on the food I eat and the impact it has on the world around me. Moving forward I definitely will be making more changes to my diet to try and limit the amount of animal products I consume on a regular basis.

Sam, 22, student in London, was paid £25 to go vegan for a week. Their reflections:

"coming from being vegetarian, I started doing this challenge thinking it would be the easiest money I've made. but quitting dairy and eggs turned out to be significantly harder than anticipated as without them my meals significantly weaker. The absence of cheese rendered my meals with like ZERO protein and after having tofu for like 5 of the 7 days I got quite sick of it, I haven't had tofu at all since doing the challenge. It was quite an experience tho and I must say if I were to go vegan it will have to be a very very slow burn and cannot cold turkey quit dairy and eggs.

subbing non dairy alternatives in my flat white felt weird at first until eventually oatmilk clicked and i have since been using only oat milk even if i get a hot chocolate or something. i genuinely wish there is a good non-dairy alternative for cheese as the one's i had tried were not very great, something for the industry to solve i suppose. i also was playing vegan roulette trying different vegan offerings on the meal deal, some were actually really banging like the all day breakfast sandwich at Tesco / fake chicken wrap in sains."

"My vegan week was such an interesting experience. I had no idea how much I depended on animal products in my normal day to day life, especially dairy. I always thought I’d never be able to make any significant changes to my diet because I’ve got so comfortable in my eating habits but it’s been great to explore alternatives.

I definitely wish I had tried more home cooking during the challenge as shopping for pre-made vegan options usually seems to result in hummus or heartache but I did have some favourites such as the tofu stir fry or vegan chilli sin carne.

I am disappointed in myself for breaching the rules towards the end of the week while hammered, however I’m glad I was given the option to atone through my extra day of veganism and watching a surprisingly entertaining documentary.

Overall I felt very conflicted about the entire experience at first. I wanted to hold onto what I’d known before but now having seen how feasible it is to make small changes, I have since cut out beef entirely from my diet and predominantly switched to oat milk over dairy products. It was great having a sense of camaraderie during the process and whilst I am still annoyed that I failed the challenge, I’m excited for trying to vary what I eat moving forward"

"I had wanted to get back into eating a more plant-based diet, however found it difficult to fully commit to it, so decided to take part in this veganuary challenge to motivate myself. The year started off well with some delicious vegan pancakes :) and I enjoyed trying out some vegan alternatives like the Alpro peach yoghurt (which is really tasty).
I did have to think more about what I was eating (I realised at some point I wasn’t eating enough protein) and I definitely missed cheese, but overall it was a good experience, and has helped me to reduce my consumption of animal products :)"

'I started veganuary as a bit of a challenge to my own sense of determination - I’ve wanted to do it for a few years but never had a real incentive. Honestly, it was really difficult - I’m also a Coeliac and it wasn’t until I was about to make my hungover breakfast on New Year’s day that I realised gluten free bread tends to have egg in it. I learnt a lot, I cooked a lot more at home and honestly didn’t miss meat much at all. I did miss eggs and cheese, but also reduced my emotional dependency on chocolate. Learning how to cook with tofu was a revelation and I can honestly see myself making vegan meals more regularly (and continuing to attempt to perfect vegan pho) - but don’t know if coeliac me can commit to a further permanent restriction on my diet. Also love feeling superior to everyone else in the group (felt like a fattie because it felt like everyone else was eating just nuts and fruit vs my reliance on kettle chips) learnt a lot and enjoyed it so! 10/10'

Our lil plant bbys are slowly graduating from beans on toast as they continue to adapt to their new plant based diets 🫡 honorable mentions include:

1) a massive vegan curry night which fed a dozen other omnivores (slides 6-8), and

2) is that too much kimchi?? i’ll let you guys be the judges…

"Had a really fun time doing veganuary! It was nice to have a group of people to do it with and kept me motivated to keep posting my creations. Also had a great time exploring new recipes and learning to cook in new funky ways, trying to replicate certain creamy/cheesy flavours, especially when I was really craving those flavours, was a good time. I don't think I faced any particular bad challenges?

Definitely a few times craving meat but by the end of the month I think that had kind of faded? Going forward I'm pretty set on eating almost entirely vegan, when I'm cooking at home I see no reason to cook with meat, I'll probably occasionally use dairy stuff but that's it. When eating out/at other people's houses I'll probably be more flexible but we'll see how it goes!

I think the final thing to reflect on is cost. I think I definitely spent more money on food this month, be it the increased cost of milk or eating more meat alternatives, supermarkets are not kind to vegans. I was actually planning on continuing to eat vegan mayo after veganuary because I'd become accustomed to the taste but it's like twice the price and I eat way too much for that to be a sensible decision. Looking forward to exploring more vegan recipes in the future and this month has given me the confidence and exposure to new recipes required to do so!"

More of that balance we know and love - as always some beautiful, and some not-so-beautiful vegan meals. most of the descriptions can be boiled down to ‘some chickpea thing’ (which are surprisingly ap-pea-ling ha ha xx).
